Bias in Machine Learning

  • E.g. models trained on movement speeds of "typical" people
  • Bias is imprinted both in the data fed to AI systems, and in the way those systems are built.
  • Norms become more strictly reinforced over time.
  • This effect can cascade as well, causing increasingly more misrepresentation.

Accessibility in Data Visualization

  • Ensure color blind people can read (maybe use patterns instead of colors)
  • Sonification (or audio graph): map the data to a musical scale; helps to understand overall trends.
  • ALT text can be contextualized; usually a reader is looking at a data visualization to answer a particular question.

Accessibility in Art

  • Cool presentation
  • For many pieces, it's necessary to transcribe both literal and thematic elements. But there's a balance here; you want to preserve the participant's agency in interpretation.
